Dog Lamp

Dog lamp showing movement

.

Whilst in the local charity shop, I saw the mechanical part of this lamp attached to a broken cupboard. The metal parts are rusted, and the lamp shade part encasing the light bulb is an old, rusted Castle beer can. I am unsure how old this is, but the graphics on the can are very different to the graphics today. It is written... "Ware Suid-Afrikaanse Bier/ Great South African Beer" on the can.

Goose neck and beer can

..

I wanted to create a free standing desk lamp, and thought that the Castle can and adjustable metal supports can be used in an interesting way. I found wooden off-cuts and glued and nailed two together forming a clean wooden block. I made the block large enough to support the gooseneck section. The outcome is a desk lamp resembling an animal, most closely resembling a dog. Although the form resembles a dog, the materials and items used in the construction of the lamp are true to themselves. This is evident upon seeing the old rusted beer can, the chromed support arms (also with signs of rust) and the wooden block, oiled and unpainted.
