STIHL earmuffs

As a university project I was required to design a set of earmuffs for the large company STIHL. The earmuffs were to be designed for mass production, and priced competitively against existing units.

My design consists of two half-round forms, cupping the user’s ears. The casings are held together and sprung with two spring steel bands running over the head. There is no Front/Back as the earmuffs are symmetrical. Both casings are exactly the same, making it simple to place the earmuffs on your head. Furthermore the benefits include simpler assembly in manufacture, and fewer manufactured components. The earmuffs are lightweight and unrestricting on ones head, and when not in use, can hang around the users neck without impairing movement. You can find the photo set on Flickr by clicking this link.
