Fifa Bottle Openers
This was a freelance project under contract from a Johannesburg based company which manufactures and sells various types of merchandise from key-chains to baggage items.
I was asked to develop three different metal bottle openers, for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. My client, who usually imported products from China, wanted to have three products which were proudly South African, designed and manufactured in South Africa. The bottle openers were to be as low cost as possible, utilising local materials and production techniques. The final three chosen directions were two stainless steel bottle openers, and one brass bottle opener. These were to be punched out of 3mm metal sheet, and deburred to create a comfortable edge. The graphics and packaging of the three bottle openers were also developed with the client. Two of the three designs made it to production, and were packaged and retailed in licensed FIFA merchandise stores during the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa.
Below is a collection images showing some of the design process from rough sketches through to computer development, CAD renderings and manufacture of samples.
